What is the Gilman Scholarship?

The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship is a grant system enacted by the U.S. Department of State since 2001 that offers awards to over 2,000 students annually. They provide scholarships to low income students to study (or intern) abroad who otherwise would have not been able to. Award amounts vary with the maximum award being up to $5,000.

Eligibility Requirements

Be a citizen of The United States
Be an undergraduate student in good standing
Be in the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program 
Be receiving a Federal Pell Grant 
Study abroad in a location with a travel advisory of either Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System

Application Process

Complete an online application, which includes uploading official transcripts and completing two essays
Receive online certifications from study abroad and financial aid advisor

Essays

Statement of Purpose​ which addresses study abroad academic, career, and personal goals

​

Follow-On Service Project proposal which will explain how the student will give back by inspiring others to pursue their own experiences abroad
